History of the city

The municipality of Pitt Meadows was incorporated in 1914 and is home to the Katzie First Nation Tribe. The land was first explored by Europeans in 1874 and by the early 1900’s the area became a destination for Dutch farmers. The area was known for its agriculture and after 1910 the city began to grow with the arrival of many French Canadians and Japanese settlers.

By 1995 the city of Pitt Meadows became a member municipality of Metro Vancouver and by 2007 The District of Pitt Meadows was incorporated as the City of Pitt Meadows.

This protects the residents from floods as 68% of Pitt Meadows is within flood plain which is caused by the Pitt River. Furthermore, the city is blessed with strong agricultural lands, prominent agricultural products include cranberry, blueberry farms, greenhouse crops, grazing and dairy farms. Moreover, the city plays an important role to Metro Vancouver’s ecology as 86% of the city is lies within the BC Agricultural Land Reserve as protected farmland.

Although the city can seem isolated, we’ll have you know it isn’t. Thanks to TransLink’s West Coast Express, residents can easily commute from Pitt Meadows to Vancouver and Mission.

In addition, the city has its own airport that’s used for flight training and features a skydiving school. The Coast Mountain Bus Company is well integrated within the city and offers many bus routes in and around the area to help commuters get around. By the way, the city is also connected by the Pitt River Bridge that connects Pitt Meadows to Port Coquitlam and has the Golden Ears Bridge that connects Pitt Meadows to Langley and Surrey.

Meadowtown Centre is an outdoor mall that offers more than 36 brand name stores and a theatre. The shopping centre is located on Lougheed Highway. This mall is a great option for family shopping and movie night. Major stores include Real Canadian Superstore, Cineplex Odeon, Sport Check, JYSK, Tim Hortons, Boston Pizza, Winners, Pier 1 Imports and Michael’s.

Blue Heron Winery is a family run business that has been operating for over 50 years. The local winery specializes in farming blueberries and cranberries. Furthermore, they offer a great selection of fine fruit table wine and dessert wines.

Education

The City of Pitt Meadows is combined with Maple Ridge and has 22 elementary schools and 6 secondary schoosl. All schools are accessible by transit via bus.

Unfortunately, there are no universities in the City of Pitt Meadows but it does offer Ridge Meadows College. The closest post-secondary institutions are located in the cities of Surrey, New Westminster and Burnaby. These include Kwantlen Polytechnic, Douglas College and Simon Fraser University.

Future of the area

The City of Pitt Meadows and Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation are working towards developing affordable housing for seniors, families and people with disabilities. The project is now completed and the new apartment complex is called Cornerstone Landing with a mix of studios and one to three bedroom units. Families, seniors and youth are now able to move into the 94 affordable home units in 2022.

Currently there is 1 new home development of a single family home in Pitt Meadows.
